Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative pundits and former President allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
