An Prediction Market Trader Profited $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers on the Ouster of Maduro.
An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.
Changing Odds in Wagers
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement
Platform data shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, indicating a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.
Several of other platform users also made large payouts from similar wagers.
Political Attention Grows
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.
Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
